Unmanned Safety Institute Providing COA and 333-waiver Support

The Unmanned Safety Institute (USI), a Florida-based LLC that provides commercial UAS training and safety certification, is now offering its expertise to businesses and individuals applying for waivers and exemptions from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, aka “drones”) for commercial and public safety use. The FAA currently offers certifications of waiver or authorization (COA) to public operators and considers exemptions under Section 333 to allow certain organizations and industries to operate UAS while the FAA works toward establishing a national small UAS rule, scheduled for release sometime this year.

As part of its application support, USI provides commercial operators who wish to pursue safe and legal use of UAS the FAA-required Standard Operating Procedure and Emergency Response Plans as well as safety training for all relevant personnel.

“Submitting a strong petition can be a complicated and resource-intensive process,” said USI’s Director of Flight Operations Josh Olds. “Our team has over forty years of experience operating UAS and has successfully received numerous COAs with safety being our top priority. Our expertise will help applicants craft a comprehensive and compelling petition.”

Currently, the FAA has issued 16 section 333 exemptions. With the average time to receive notification currently at 120 days, USI recommends interested parties begin the process sooner than later.

The Unmanned Safety Institute is a professional training organization for UAS operators and proponents focused on improving safety in UAS operations through the adoption and modification of time honored aviation safety and training practices. In addition to training, USI also provides flight-testing and R&D, safety audits, and FAA waiver application support. USI is also the UAS trainer of choice for the Global Aerospace SM4 Safety Initiative, a leading aviation safety and risk management partnership with Global Aerospace. Global Aerospace’s innovative SM4 Safety Program focuses on four critical aspects of safety management: Prevention, Planning, Response, and Recovery.
